Joining BPS

Youth Members
We will begin offering memberships to youth in early 2008. Until that time, if you are anxious to get started with Baden-Powell Scouting, why not gather a group of friends around you now and start playing the game of Scouting? Read about our Wolf Cub and Scout sections and use the online handbooks and resources to give you ideas. As soon as we can make memberships available to young people, we will announce it here with information on how to go about chartering your group with us.

Adult Members
Our Rover section is now open and accepting membership applications. If a Crew exists in your area, you may join it with the approval of the Group or Crew Leader. If no Crew exists in your area, you may either start a Group or register as a Lone Rover. As more Rovers join from a given area, we will put you in touch with others near you to encourage you to start a Group or Crew. Parents of children who want to join us are encouraged to register as Rovers so that we can begin working with you to lay the groundwork for a future Group.

Starting a New Group
A Group is local organizational unit that contains one or more sections. Each Group determines its own name which includes a numeric designation and a descriptor of local interest. Each Group also picks its own unique colors to be worn on their neckerchief, and to be incorporated into their Group flag and crest/insignia. Each section in the Group carries the Group name and members of each section wear the same group colors. For example the 3rd Charter Oak Scout Group would contain these sections:

3rd Charter Oak Rover Crew
3rd Charter Oak Scout Troop
3rd Charter Oak Wolf Cub Pack

Numbers, names, and colors are unique to each Group. Once reserved, they cannot be used by anyone else. See the Registered Groups page for the complete list of existing Groups and registerd colors. When starting a new Group, have fun pickng a name and colors that reflects the area you live.

Those who wish to serve as leaders in future Wolf Cub Packs and Scout troops should register now as Rovers and form a Crew. It takes a minimum of four to start a new Crew. If you have four or more prospective members ready to join, you may request a Crew application. Send it in to us with the data on your members. Once we approve your application, we will issue you a charter for your Group and Crew. As we open the Youth Sections, we can grant additional charters for Troops and Packs as needed.

Please note that all Rovers who will eventually become leaders will be subject to our Youth Protection Policies which will be rolled out in 2008. This will include submission of police background checks and other requirements.

What's the cost?
There are no chartering fees associated with starting a new group. Effective in 2008, dues are $20 per person (international members, US$1) . We strive to keep our costs as low as possible. We are also 100% volunteer run with no paid staff. We do not aim to make a profit from anyone.

Already a Scout Group with another organisation?
BPS is not seeking to expand its organization by taking groups from any other organization. Each organization has its own merits and styles. BPS follows the original teachings of Baden-Powell and his love for the great outdoors.
However, if you feel that what we offer better meets the needs of your local area, then we would be pleased to help you, on an individual basis, make a decision on whether or not to join us.
